Empowering Women of History - March is Women History Month

“It is no coincidence that America’s great success in the past century came as women steadily increased their participation in every aspect of society.”

The first woman to Chair the Federal Reserve Janet L. Yellen could not have said it better at her speech at the Women’s History Month Reception at the U.S. Capitol, Washington, D.C. What started as a day to commemorate women in 1911 turned out to become a week of celebration in 1980. By 1987, Congress acted to make that week into a full month.

Just a few years before International Women’s Day was declared, women gained their right to vote which marked the start of a century of progress for women. Those ideals continue to be so influential in the world that it became the principle of equality for all, most especially women. Ms. Yellen recalled how women’s increasing participation in the workforce became a major factor in sustaining growing family incomes. Using the talents and efforts of women in the workplace has certainly made us more productive.

While women are increasingly visible in many varied roles, there remain a number of industries where only a handful of women are able to take on management and leadership roles.  One of which is in the real estate industry.  While the share of commercial real estate professionals who are women climbed to nearly equal measure as compared to men, only 9% claimed that they held positions in management.

Fortunately, real estate deals little with corporations, brands or technology. Instead, real estate deals with people and their homes which gives most women an advantage because the home has been domain.   Business in general requires improvising, creating something from nothing, and juggling and setting priorities. These are skills that are honed by running household and rearing children. Women have also become more successful in residential real estate because they appreciate and understand the home from a practical and emotional level and are therefore more effective in conveying their understanding of the client needs more so than men.   I could be wrong, but I don't think so. This not fair but it's real.  Don't hate the player - hate the game.  Women are force to be reckoned with in the Real Estate business and we have not seen anything yet.

The future is bright for Women in government, politics, business and real estate.   Businesses in every category will continue to grow as they reap the benefits of inclusion and greater participation of women in leadership.  Despite the increased diversity, there is still much room for improvement.   More women must pursue leadership opportunities in their communities and be advocates for the advancement of women in business.   The saying is truer today than it has ever been.  If you want to get a job done right first time - give it to woman.  I can attest to the power of womanhood in being a father of four incredible and accomplished daughters who are incredible women and a wife who is the rock of our home and the CEO of our Real Estate Company.

Let's embrace the history of Women everywhere and celebrate the great contribution they have made and continue to make in the world.
