The Profession of Real Estate . . . or is the word Profession an Overstatement? Part VI

Are you ready for an upgrade as a broker/owner?

Then don't be afraid to fire people or to fire yourself.  It's better to have ten agents who are so busy you have to hire assistants to help them with their business than 200 agents of which 190 are performing below your standards.   It's time to raise the standards in our industry.  Having a NMLS license or BRE real estate agent or broker's license only means you can memorize answers, laws and codes for a test that you will rarely, if ever, need to recall for any transaction.  We all know this to be true.  Raising the bar or upgrading your team is not about the test or meeting educational requirements to get licensed.  It is also not about how many bodies you can recruit to fill the empty desks in your office.  It's about accountability and being willing to fire anyone on the team that is not supporting brand, meeting production and professionalism standard - including yourself.  You must send the right message to members on the team who are doing the right things and demonstrate to them that you support what they bring to the company and are thankful for the great work they do and the great environment they create.  Your top 10% want to hear it and see it in you.  This is an issue for all local firms.  Brokers/owners that continue to allow poor production, unprofessional conduct, unprofessional attire and the other issues I have mentioned will see it affect their brand, agent and loan consultant retention and profitability.  It's time to upgrade your agents and loan consultants and set a new standard for your office.  It is time for you to upgrade yourself or fire yourself and hire someone who can lead like you would like to lead but cannot. Less is more. Quality is everything.  Give the professional members on your team who are profitable an assistant and the support they need to grow. Be slow to hire new people unless they are extraordinary and quick to fire people who do not represent the brand.   Real Estate and lending is not for everyone and we must be more selective in who we hire.  To the real estate firms that take raising the bar seriously, start firing agents that hurt the brand regardless of their production. Adhere to a very strict professional code of conduct on everything as you will be respected by the business community and by the consumers who want to know that you take the business of real estate seriously.  Most importantly you will grow and prosper the right way.   Most employees desire accountability, and will thrive in an environment that has structure, offers coaching, and holds them accountable.   If you are a broker/owner, provide this level of support and watch what happens.  Watch your productivity and profitability go through the roof.  More importantly, watch the value of your brand go up, the work environment improve, and all the problems normally associated with hiring the wrong agents, loan officers and staff completely go away.   Are you ready for an upgrade?
